Hatch

Productivity App

✷ Check out my process page for a full project breakdown! ✷

Hatch is a productivity app aimed at people seeking to cut down their phone time and focus on what’s important to them. I expanded my idea for the app by creating an accompanying daily productivity journal to further build constructive habits and help plan out goals.

App Overview

Problem: Not enough tools to help reduce phone addiction.

Solution: Create an app that helps the user to replace their habit of using their phone by rewarding them for time spent “focusing” in the app.

I chose this project idea based on my own experiences with phone addiction, the experiences of my friends and family, and the enthusiasm of my classmates.

App Features

The app uses a digital pet to motivate the user to focus by providing them with coins every time they complete a successful focus session. With those coins, the user can purchase new pet types, accessories, or dyes for their pets. The focus timer works by counting down the minutes the user chooses to focus for, and if the app detects the user exiting the app to do something else (like scroll through social media), the reward is lost and they have to try again. The main motivators are customization options, group support, and visualized progress. All of these features are filtered through a visually calm and friendly design language to reduce intimidation and promote feelings of productivity.

Conclusion

This project really allowed me room to dive into my initial proposal and come up with my own design solutions. I became familiar with Figma, conducted research, and came out with something better than what I envisioned going in. As I iterate on this concept, I’m looking forward to doing more user testing, and I see this project as a platform to explore different art styles and push beyond my comfort zone.
